Science Challenge 2019


George Town, 6th August 2019 – A total of 100 students from 13 schools around Penang competed against each other in 4th annual Science Challenge 2019, organised by the Centre of Pre-University Studies, UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College on July 26th, 2019.

The competition was aimed at enhancing the secondary school students’ knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and expose them to the different sciences, which is Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

A total of 25 groups with 4 participants each were required to send two group members to solve 100 questions on scientific theories while the other two members were required to attend lab-related activities.

“Each team went through two rounds with the first round being an elimination round.

“The top five groups were selected from the first round and they solved questions in an online platform called “Kahoot” to be the top three winners,” said Teh Seow Ling, the coordinator of Science Challenge 2019 and also a lecturer of Pre-University studies, UOW Malaysia KDU Penang.

She added that the students had to answer 20 Kahoot questions on chemistry, biology and mathematics during the second round.

The champion this year came from Chung Ling High School and the group won RM500 cash and certificates. Han Chiang High School bagged the 1st runner-up title with RM300 and certificates. The 2nd runner-up title went to SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian with RM200 cash and certificates.

“University level education should focus on critical thinking and UOW Malaysia KDU Penang focuses on creating thinkers and helping them to generate ideas while enhancing their employability,” said Associate Professor Dr. Brian Imrie, deputy vice-chancellor of UOW Malaysia KDU Penang, during the opening ceremony of Science Challenge 2019.

“A scientist must have a dream and a vision. UOW Malaysia KDU Penang will help you to achieve your dream and vision as now we are part of the University of Wollongong, one of the public university in Australia that is in the top 20 in the world. Thus, UOW Malaysia KDU Penang is the first foreign university in the Northern Region,” said Dr. Brian.
