Inspired to make a difference following the launch of a short documentary “The Malayan Tiger. It’s Now or Never” in June 2019, students from event management class of UOW Malaysia KDU School of Communications & Creative Arts (SCCA) played their roles as socially responsible future leaders in environmental and biodiversity conservation by launching ‘SAVE THE MALAYAN TIGERS CAMPAIGN’ #TIGERSFOR2MORROW. This event was a collaboration with Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN) under the governance of Ministry of Water, Land and Water Resources.

This three-day fundraising campaign was not only designed to raise funds in support of PERHILITAN’s conservation activities to protect the Malayan Tigers but also to educate, create a sense of awareness amongst public and students of UOW Malaysia KDU University College to support the ministry’s efforts in saving the Malayan tigers.

The campaign was officiated by Ybhg. Dato’ Abdul Kadir Bin Abu Hashim, Director General, Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN), Encik Mohd Nasrul bin Menhat, Principal Assistant Secretary of Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources along with Prof. Dr. Hiew Pang Leang, Vice-Chancellor of UOW Malaysia KDU University College, Prof Dr Hon Wei Min, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UOW Malaysia KDU University Colllege and Mr Loo Chong Hang, Head of School of School of Communications & Creative Arts.

Present at the launch, Director General, Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN), Ybhg. Dato’ Abdul Kadir Bin Abu Hashim said “I am delighted to see educational institutions like UOW Malaysia KDU University College play an active role in building up awareness among students on the importance and the need for sustainability efforts, and the personalised actions they can take to make a difference. Platforms like these are instrumental for us to listen and share ideas on what we can do individually and collectively to contribute significantly to this noble cause. With fewer than 200 Malayan tigers left, it is imperative for us to inform the public our concerns for the Malayan Tigers; a proud symbol of Malaysia’s natural heritage that features prominently in the country’s national emblem”.

Prior to the launch, students were determined to carry out a two-day pre-event fundraising activity at Utropolis Marketplace Glenmarie selling tiger-themed items to garner funds along with attractive tiger mascots strolling the halls of UOW Malaysia KDU to create pre-launch hype. During the launch, there were a variation of different kind of activities, from booths selling accessories and henna designs to tiger-themed game activities such as Tiger Pong, Balloon Popper and Roulette Wheel. Students were also treated to two dance performances comprising a plethora of amazing skills of talented students from the UOW Malaysia KDU Performing Arts Society.

To further add to this commendable event, an educational exhibition was set up by PERHILITAN to highlight the devastating predicament of the Malayan tigers in Malaysia and promote awareness of the threats these tigers face in their natural habitats. Due to high market demand and habitat loss, the population has undergone a significant decline over the past century, with less than 200 tigers living in the wild.

This campaign also served as a learning opportunity for students who are currently taking Bachelor of Communications (Hons) degree programme as this was part of assessment component from the Event Management module where students were required to organise an event within a stipulated timeline. “It was tough at the initial stages of the planning as we were hurdled with many challenges. Everyone had different opinions and different working styles. As the project leader, people management skill is so important to make sure that every team members have clear communication among one another. We eventually came to an agreement and we are pleased to see that everything turned out well. We learnt a lot especially time management, multi-tasking and managing expectations as we needed to ensure that we complete the given task within the stipulated timeline. It was definitely a memorable and insightful experience for all of us”, said Project Leader of ‘SAVE THE MALAYAN TIGERS CAMPAIGN’ #TIGERSFOR2MRW, Tun Mun Chong.

The funds collected which amount RM5, 000 was donated to PERHILTAN during the Global Tiger Day at Le Meridien Hotel, Putrajaya on 28th July 2019.
