Growing up in a single-parent household, it was tough to afford quality education in Cambodia. It was a challenge to complement basic subjects taught in school with the English language skills proficient enough for tertiary education overseas.” – Sorik Rath Mong, a First-Class Honours business graduate from UOW Malaysia KDU University College.

Starting from a humble background and despite facing challenges while growing up in Cambodia, Sorik Rath Mong, commonly known as Lyly paved the way of excellence when she emerged as one of the recipients of the prestigious Chevening scholarship this year. Chevening is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme that offers future leaders the unique opportunity to study in the United Kingdom. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding professionals from all over the world to pursue a one-year master’s degree in any subject at any UK university.

“When I applied for this scholarship, I was still working at Dell Technologies supporting both Asia and half of US region. So, I had to work quite late at night and spared my weekends to complete my application. The journey in obtaining Chevening scholarship was tedious and challenging but worthwhile.”

Mong Sorik Rath is a First-Class Honours graduate of UOW Malaysia KDU’s Bachelors of Business programme and a former Treasury Advisor for Asia Pacific Japan Region at Dell Technologies. She embarked on this victorious journey to Malaysia when she was granted The Joint ECM Libra Foundation-UOW Malaysia KDU University College ASEAN Scholarship to complete her three-year undergraduate degree in Business specialising in Economics and Finance.

“Seeing that English was not my first language, my first semester at UOW Malaysia KDU was very challenging. To top that off, as compared to my peers, subjects like macroeconomic, microeconomic and basic accounting were very primitive to me as they were not taught in my school back then. I had to put twice my effort to cope with it.” She highlighted that it was stressful at the initial stages as she had to go the extra mile to maintain her excellent results in order to retain her scholarship. She would revise what she had learnt every day and studied ahead of class to ensure that she possessed an in-depth understanding of each subject.

However, with a single-minded determination to achieve success, this ambitious and aspiring young woman continued to strive for victory and is eternally grateful for receiving immense help and support from her lecturers at UOW Malaysia KDU. “With the guidance and support of my lectures and friends at UOW Malaysia KDU, my educational experience has been a joy and a privilege. I have grown and learned so much in just 3 years. Meeting new people, making new friends, obtaining a degree and working at a multinational company were huge achievements in my life. I have been armed with knowledge and insights related to economics, finance and accounting. I have tremendously improved my communication skills which is very essential in the working environment. I am thankful for everything and savoured every moment I spent at UOW Malaysia KDU. I am honoured to call myself a UOW Malaysia KDU graduate,” she added.

KDU Bachelors of Business (Hons) is a 3-year programme that provides interdisciplinary knowledge and business skills, leads students to a practical business degree. The programme allows students the freedom to tailor their degree according to their interests in a specific business area or entrepreneurship.

Associate Professor Dr. Brian Wong, Head of School of Business at UOW Malaysia KDU University College said, “Sorik’s success is definitely a euphoric moment for us, and we are very proud of her. She has always been a very resourceful, studious, and resilient student who works smart to succeed. UOW Malaysia KDU School of Business embraces Humanistic Entrepreneurialism approach which emphasises the essentials of humanistic teaching and real world education. With this approach, we believe that we will be able to prepare students to be industry-ready, equipped with an ethical and entrepreneurial mindset.”

Upon completing her master’s degree in the UK, Sorik plans to return to her home country and offer a progressive solution by collaborating with the Cambodian government to digitise the traditional data management to facilitate both public and private sectors, driving better economic and business strategy for the nation.  With sheer determination and well-defined goals, Sorik is compelled to make a difference and stands by her words, “Success doesn’t happen by chance. It takes strategic actions in the right direction to get there. Determined people always work hard to achieve what they want under any circumstances and most importantly they react positively to failure!”
