A Euphoric Moment for Khor Kai Wern!


Khor Kai Wern bagged a silver medal under the Individual Pastry Art Category at the prestigious 25th IKA Culinary Olympics 2020 held in Stuttgart, Germany from 14th February to 19th February 2020.

In line with UOW Malaysia KDU’s mission to continuously produce industry-ready graduates, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts once again has struck gold with the recent accomplishment of one of their students. Khor Kai Wern, a Bachelor of Arts in International Culinary Arts (Hons) student bagged a silver medal, under the Individual Pastry Art Category at the prestigious 25th IKA Culinary Olympics 2020 held in Stuttgart, Germany from 14th February to 19th February 2020. Hosted by the German Chefs’ Association, the event saw approximately 1800 participants, including 110 teams and about 800 individual competitors, from 67 countries.

“It was definitely a euphoric moment for me when they announced the winners. Seeing that Avengers was a trend back in 2019, I decided to go with a more modern-styled Avengers counter piece that would further showcase my skills in the producing detailed figurines. Although it was very challenging at the beginning as I only had one week for touching up and assembling my showpiece in Germany and encountered many other challenges, I am eternally grateful and appreciative for this valuable opportunity to be able to compete with participants from all over the world,” said Khor Kai Wern.

The dual award BA (Hons) in International Culinary Arts degree is equips students with the knowledge and expertise expected in modern culinary establishments. In this program, graduates will receive not only a UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College degree, but also an award from ICI International Culinary Institute in Luzern, Switzerland. By combining their technical skills with the application of modern culinary technology, graduates will have the capacity for self-direction, self-reliance and personal accountability as professionals in the culinary arts environment.
