When it comes to the teaching approach, it’s usually the traditional lecture-based classes with many worksheets and, of course, the renowned whiteboards and markers.
However, things have changed dramatically since then. Today, children are tech savvy having grown up in a technologically advanced world. So, by the time they reach primary school, utilizing a whiteboard for all lessons is no longer an option.
While passive learning can’t be avoided at times, interactive learning makes classes more enjoyable for pupils.
This article looks at interactive teaching and how it will help students be more efficient in their studies.
Higher dropout and even failure rates for programming subjects in university have been observed across the years. The problem could be the conventional teaching approach that emphasises teacher-centred learning.
In recent years, teaching and learning slowly migrated to online-based teaching and learning platforms due to the pandemic.
Without proper interactions, the passive teaching method has hindered learners from interacting with the context and created a dull learning experience.
Here are some reasons why interactivity is important for virtual classes:
Interactive learning allows students and teachers to not only exchange and display knowledge quickly, but also to collaborate and enjoy working together. As a result, students are easily engaged in class.
Additionally, students may communicate with teachers from all over the world using simply a laptop, internet connection, projector, and webcam.
In an atmosphere of their choosing, students learn better and feel more at ease. This isn’t always achievable in a classroom, but it’s one of the most significant benefits of online education.
You know where you work best – whether it’s in the library, at home, or somewhere else. Allowing youngsters to bring laptops or tablets into their ideal working environment will enable them to reach their full potential and get the most out of their education.
Everyone works differently, and while some students like the classroom, for others who don’t, this flexibility can help them better absorb knowledge and improve their grades.
Another benefit of interactive education is that it aids students in discovering their resources and allows them to have some influence over the learning process. They may choose how they want to develop and present their projects, which helps in developing excellent research abilities, which will be pretty valuable.
The game could be a tool in teaching programming subjects because of its characteristics and features that engage a user in its environment.
A game is an activity that follows rules one or more individuals participate in for entertainment. To date, the game is not merely for entertainment.
It could, however, play a vital role in other areas such as product development, command and control, analysis, and marketing.
Education could be one of these areas that applied some games or gaming characteristics (i.e., graphical user interface, motivation, and entertainment) and principles (i.e., empowered learner, problem-solving, understanding, and game structure).
The game was integrated into education to form an innovative educational paradigm known as game-based learning. The combination of game and education can boost the intrinsic motivation level of a learner as games are highly engaging to the learners via their challenges and feedback.
However, this may be hard to be adopted in usual teaching and learning activities as it may require a suitable game for delivering the topics of the subjects. The process of developing a game is not easy and may be costly too.
Therefore, academicians came up with another way to deliver the learning context via a game mechanism known as gamification.
Unlike game-based learning, gamification uses games as a medium but applies the game mechanics to deliver the course content.
With the unique characteristics of games such as points rewards, badges, leaderboards, etc, gamification could increase students’ engagement during the learning process.
Quizzes could be designed with these game mechanics to achieve the concept of gamification. There are a lot of gamification apps that academicians can apply in their classrooms, such as Kahoot!, Gimkit, Quizizz, Quizlet and many more.
These are some tools that academicians can apply to make learning more fun. Unlike game-based learning, which requires more time and cost to develop a game with suitable content, these applications could simply be utilised in any context.
It could be convenient for the academicians to prepare the class activities with the content they want to deliver in class. Furthermore, students’ engagement and motivation were also increased when they were competing with classmates during the quiz activities.
In UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College, academicians are always encouraged to explore new teaching methods and learn how to help our students gain knowledge. Gamification seems to be the innovation that fits in the picture now.
We always strive to provide our pupils with the best form of learning they are entitled to receive. With online classes, we supply our students with various online tools, such as Canvas and e-library, to ensure they get all the help they need to complete their studies. Our lecturers also are well equipped with interactive online tools to make learning digitally fun.
Traditional learning techniques enable teachers to choose how they will deliver material to their pupils, while online learning allows students greater freedom and control over their education. With the world constantly progressing into a more digital one, we believe interactive online learning to be the next best thing that will boost your child’s education.
