What is computer science?

Computer Science focuses on a range of area from the theory through programming to cutting-edge development of computing solutions. This is an area that offers a strong foundation that allows for the adaption of new technologies and new ideas.

The nomenclature for the word science in computer science reflects the practice of solving problems and scientific approaches which in the world of computer science is about pushing the boundaries of computing technology. This means that computer science students need to focus on understanding, designing, and developing programs and computers.

At its core, Computer Science programs concentrates on data, data transformation, and algorithms. A computer science program is less structured than the software engineering programs, giving students more flexibility to build depth or breadth in a variety of application domains or in the fundamentals of computer science.

 

Why study computer science?

The global cyber security market is expected to increase from USD 150 billion in 2018 to USD 250 billion by 2023. Malaysia is one of the top three ASEAN countries that are expected to contribute 75 per cent of cyber-security services market share by 2025. Cyber Security is the process and techniques involved in protecting sensitive data, computer systems, networks and software applications from cyber-attacks.

The Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) in UOW Malaysia KDU offers students a strong foundation that allows for the adoption and adaptation of new technologies and new ideas. The program focuses from theory through programming, to cutting-edge development of computing solutions, and emphasises the critical areas of the dynamic computing industry through its specialisations in the following disciplines.

Computer science vs software engineering

One of the common questions asked by students is regarding the difference between computer science and software engineering. 

These fields of study are very similar in terms of subjects and requirements. The main difference between these two is that computer science will allow you to choose from a wider range of topics. This includes data management, security as well as software engineering fundamentals. This includes learning about software testing and design. 

If you want to learn about the whole process of building and maintaining software and are more of a hands-on approach type of person, then software engineering would be the course for you. Choose computer science if you like math and logic. Computer science is also the path to choose if you want to venture into artificial intelligence or security.

MyGameDev Talent Development Initiative:
In 2012, the Ministry of Higher Education awarded UOW Malaysia KDU with a PEMANDU Entry Point Project initiative under the Economic Transformation Plan and the National Key Results Area (Education) to spearhead the Game Development industry in Malaysia, focusing on awareness and talent building activities. This Game Development Cluster represents the start of a strategic collaboration between educational institutions and the Game Development industry to create a High-Income, Sustainable Creative Economy in the area of Game Development.

The primary measure of success in a digital game region is a critical mass of talent. Without critical mass, it is difficult to find support, retain talent, and attract international visibility and credibility. In an effort to maintain a constant flow of talents into the Game Development Industry, MyGameDev’s role is to ensure that not only are the relevant institutions generating graduates which are industry ready but to also prepare a ready pool of raw post-secondary student talents to feed into this pipeline.

UEC :

Mathematics Requirement

(i) Students MUST have attained a ‘CREDIT’ in ADDITIONAL MATHEMATICS at SPM/O Levels or equivalent.
OR
(ii) MUST have attained a CREDIT in MATHEMATICS and a CREDIT in either a SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY or ENGINEERING subject for SPM/O Levels or equivalent.

Students who do not fulfil the mathematics requirements at SPM level may be admitted if their entry qualification contain subject(s) of Mathematics and their achievement is equivalent or higher than the required Credit of Additional Mathematics at the SPM level.

 

Note: Students who do not fulfill either requirements are advised to seek advice from the school before enrolment.

English Requirement

Local Student:
Band 3 in MUET

 

International Student:
Band 5.5 in IELTS; or a min score of 46 (IBT) or 454 (PBT) in TOEFL ; or score 51 and above for Pearson English Test
