The Global Game Jam® (GGJ) is the world’s largest game creation event. This annual event, held under the auspices of International Game Developers Association (IGDA), gathers game developers from across the globe to create games based on a central theme within a 48-hour time frame. A “game jam” is essentially a hackathon focused on game development. In January 2020, GGJ had 934 locations in 118 countries creating 9,601 games in one weekend! GGJ 2021 is scheduled for 29-31 January 2021. The jam is known for helping foster game developer networks, increase confidence and opportunities within the community.

The GGJ usually stimulates collaboration and is not a competition. However, this year GGJ also partnered with Core Games for an all-new jamming experience – The GGJ + Core Game Jam! Core is a new, free platform for creating and playing games. Core is backed by the power of the Unreal engine. With more than 500 participants taking part, students from UOW Malaysia KDU’s School of Computing and Creative Media secured first place. The UOW Malaysia KDU students who won the competition included Jonathan Tang Ziyi and Lee Yi, both Bachelor of Game Development (Hons) students; Soo Sin Chuan, a Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) student, and Alvin Koh, who is currently enrolled in a Diploma in Sequential Art (Manga). They a\managed to clinch the top position in the ‘most game plays’ category with their game, Remembrance.

UOW Malaysia KDU has regularly been one of the three Malaysian sites for the Global Game Jam and has been a host for the Malaysian chapter since 2014. UOW Malaysia KDU’s participation is focused upon ensuring a global platform for its students to get involved early with the online game development community. This is in-line with the UOW Malaysia KDU’s Bachelor of Game Development (Hons) Program’s vision to cultivate groups of high quality, skilled, knowledgeable, creative and innovative graduates to meet the ever-growing needs of the industry for highly trained and proficient talents with very specialized fields of studies.

UOW Malaysia KDU is one of South East Asia’s Premier Game Development institutions and an Unreal Academic Partner. We would like to congratulate all the GGJ + Core Game Jam!  2020 winners for their well-earned victory.
