As an institution, UOW Malaysia KDU measures student success on both how well students perform in their academic studies and also excel in their subsequent careers. Therefore, the institution has implemented a range of attractive internship opportunities, embedded within academic programs, to  prepare students for their future careers.

On Friday, 19th March 2021, the UOW Malaysia KDU Student and Alumni Center (SAC) conducted a virtual session as part of the “Virtual Career Enhancement Series” to prepare students for their upcoming internships. Topics included workplace etiquette, do’s and don’ts during internship placement amongst other things to prepare them for an internship. The whole 3-hour session (3:00 pm – 6:00 pm) was conducted virtually through Cisco Webex.

For this year’s Virtual Career Enhancement Series, SAC invited three distinguished speakers: Ms. Lee Siew Yeen, the Director of Out of the Box, Kevin Lim, Functional Lead, UOW Malaysia KDU’s Human Resources Department, and Ms. Azura the Assistant Manager of UOW Malaysia KDU’s Student and Alumni Centre.

The first speaker, Ms. Lee Siew Yeen, commenced her talk guiding students on writing both a résumé and a curriculum vitae (CV), teaching attendees on how to  add in relevant skills and provided handy tips on how to make their CV’s appealing to employers. She shared technques on how students can make their CVs concise, yet able to highlight their relevant experience and academic achievements. Students were also exposed to good examples of cover letters, résumé and CVs, and effective follow-up email insights throughout the talk. Ms Lee ended her talk with bonus insights on how to make a lasting impression when presenting oneself in an interview, this was accompanied by students doing an online interview roleplay to practice their interview technique.

Mr. Kevin Lim, our second speaker, took over the stage and shared about the do’s and don’ts during an internship. Two memorable statements he shared on do’s don’ts were: “Do Be Organized and Don’ts Be Idle during your internship!” He ended the talk with a wonderful quote by Cicero: “gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all the others.”

Last but not least, Ms. Azura in the closing session shared more on the internship processes and showing some important dates students should observe on their upcoming internship. The students did not leave the virtual sessions empty-handed as they were given a QR code to access their internship starter pack. The session ended with a question-and-answer session.

The session garnered many positive responses from the students. “It truly was a great opportunity that I was able to join this series. I felt it is really important to know ahead, not only for my internship but also for my future career. Also, I can now improve on my resume as well as learn to sell myself during an interview”, said Hanan Wafaa’, one of the student attendees.

Puteri Sarah, another student attendee, shared, “I think this session was crucial for me, because prior to this session, I haven’t written any résumés before, it also gives me more confidence to go for my internship now.”
