UOW Malaysia KDU Student & Alumni Centre is dedicated to provide opportunities for students to learn and discover outside of the classroom by immersing students with co-curricular and extra-curricular activities for empower youths with wide series of well planned activities internally and externally.

This year UOW Malaysia KDU students once again embark on the volunteerism effort to feed the homeless and underprivileged society around Kuala Lumpur through the collaboration with Institute Onn Jaafar (IOJ) for Jom Sahur.

Jom Sahur took place in three different locations; Pusat Transit Gelandangan (PTG) in Kuala Lumpur, Chow Kit and Rohingya School at Selayang. The event was scheduled from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m during the second night of the fasting month.

UOW Malaysia KDU Volunteer, Cassandra mentioned, “In my opinion, it taught me to be really grateful for what I have and we all should too. We think that not having the things we want will make us sad but actually it’s not, by comparing with their lifestyle. I’ve been volunteering for this type of event since high school and it always touches my heart by seeing them being happy and actually think that there are people like us who still cares about them. I really enjoy helping out when it comes to these type of volunteering work”.

For this event, we’re armed with packets of bun, fried mee hoon and drinks, the volunteers from UOW Malaysia KDU then split to 2 groups where 15 of the students will be distributing the food for the homeless at Chow Kit around 11.30pm and the rest of them will distribute the food at Pusat Transit Gelandangan.

Apart from the food that being prepared by the IOJ, UOW Malaysia KDU also bought 20 jars of biscuits and 6 pieces of ‘sejadah’ contributed to Pusat Transit Gelandangan. At midnight, 6 students went to Rohingya School at Selayang distributed the food for the refugee that stayed in the school.

Sarah Qistina, one of the UOW Malaysia KDU Volunteer said that “Personally I really enjoyed volunteering for Jom Sahur, it really opened my eyes about homeless people and I have learned so much. As for the benefits is that it helps be me to be more aware and more open minded about homeless people. I guess another benefit is that I get to meet new people and make new friends’’.

As a result, during Ramadan, much charitable giving is done by the community. Donations are usually focused on giving to those stricken by poverty and hunger. In celebration of Ramadan, consider donating to one of these highly rated charities which either work predominantly in countries with large Muslim populations or strive towards the alleviation of hunger.
