Recently, the Student & Alumni Centre (SAC) held a successful health talk session tackling a very important subject: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Nurse Alia from Sunway Medical Centre was invited as the guest speaker to give an in-depth explanation on CTS.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that causes pain, numbness, and tingling in the hand and arm. The condition occurs when one of the major nerves to the hand, the median nerve, is squeezed or compressed as it travels through the wrist. Nurse Alia started the session by explaining the anatomy of the hand to establish a common foundation of understanding before delving deeper into the topic. She revealed the common signs and symptoms of the syndrome. They include pain in the wrist or hand, tingling, swelling around the wrist, and many more.
We also learnt about the risk factors for the occurrence of CTS such as water retention, irritation to the tendon, hormonal changes. A helpful list of practical home remedies was presented for the treatment of CTS, Nurse Alia also shared what doctors do to help treat the syndrome.
Nurse Alia guided participants on how to make ergonomic modifications, meaning the elimination of provoking postures and activities. Practical solutions included such easy to implement solutions such as using a cushion under your wrist when you type to support it and relieve pressure. Overall, it was a very relevant and informative session for the students and staff of UOW Malaysia KDU.
“I actually loved it because I joined the health talk to learn something new and it did give out some benefits. Hope you’ll do more!” said Durgashini, a student of UOW Malaysia KDU.
“I think it was a good session and exposure for us as we are working in the corporate world. We got to know how to exercise especially sitting in front of the computer all day long” said Jess Lee, National Marketing Manager, UOW Malaysia KDU.
