To encourage the passion of entrepreneurship, within a stimulating but safe environment, UOW Malaysia KDU organizes at its George Town campus regular ‘Best Business Idea Competitions’. The latest installment was held on November 28th, 2019 and saw students go through the demanding process of having their ideas exposed to the scrutiny of experienced entrepreneurs.

The ‘Best Business Idea Competition’ is part of UOW Malaysia KDU’s focused effort on producing graduates who can kick start their own business. This competitive event is held twice a year, whereby the students from the School of Business as well as School of Engineering, Computing, and Built Environment pitch their innovative business ideas to a team of seasoned entrepreneurs, within an environment likened to the scrutiny experienced in the UK Dragon’s Den television series. The latest in the Best Business Idea Competition series included the following panel members – Mr. Richard Oon, National Tax Director of ShineWing TYTEOH, Mr. Sim Choo Kheng, Founder and CEO of Sim Leisure Group Limited, Mr. Clarence Leong, Founder and CEO of Easy Parcel Sdn. Bhd, and Mr. Lio Yi Jun, Chief Product Officer of Dropee.com.

The competition is the ideal platform to gain the confidence to assert their ideas and business acumen, learn how to stand out from the crowd, while also gaining the advice and attention of industry experts. Some have even had the opportunity to gain an internship opportunity following the judges observation of their analytical, problem-solving, presentation, and innovation skills.

The champion title for the Best Business Idea Competition this semester was bagged by the Jargon Smart Helmet group with a cash prize of RM700 and a trophy. They were also provided with the opportunity to access a seed investment and access to on-campus facilities to assist in bringing their business into reality. The team was comprised of Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering students, who presented their business idea of a helmet with a rear-view camera.

“Our Jargon Smart Helmet has a built-in rear-view camera that lets you see what’s behind you just by looking at a projected screen on the front of your helmet visor. The smart rear-view camera motor cycle helmet not only allows you to view the road behind, but will also give you a 360-degree view of surroundings to keep you safe,” said Khoo Ding Xuan, the group leader of Jargon Smart Helmet. Their business idea gained positive feedback from the judges, and other participants.
