Computing Students Triumph In First Hackfest


Lim Ting Wei, Sriram, Muhammad Lokman, and Ye Htut Twin emerged as the winning team took home a RM3000 prize in the first Hackathon in Malaysia to use an Open Source Platform or IBM’s Bluemix with the theme of Smart Tourism and Smart City. The panel of judges were drawn from Industry, and universities to assess the two-tier competition consisting of 3 minutes and 5 minutes pitching.
The team, who called themselves “FOTRA” developed an “Augmented Reality (AR) enabled Street Art Navigation for Penang Island” , which will help tourists locate street art through google map API with the AR enabled MobileApps. The features of the Mobile app are to connect tourists with the heritage art pipeline through 3D modeling, textual and voice output information.

The 3 day event endeavored to establish a new platform for young innovators and software developers to realize their dreams of developing a computer or mobile application which benefits society (Penang Tourism industry). There were 50 participants; from secondary schools, university students, and employees from software industries in Penang and other states of Malaysia.
