A Halloween Fright Night

Halloween season is here!! Isn’t that exciting? But our students from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College (UOW-KDU Penang) are making Halloween even more memorable.

A total of 20 students organised ‘A Halloween Fright Night’ with AutoCity Sdn Bhd in Juru AutoCity, Penang, on Oct 12, 2019. This event was filled with many activities for visitors such as singing and dance performances, Halloween Pumpkin coloring competition, Hungry Ghost competition, Kids Zombie Run, Treasure Hunt and a horror movie screening.

“Our students used horror make-up and transformed themselves into ghosts to entertain the visitors”.

“I was very surprised that they managed the stage very well and professionally, with great performances and games for the visitors,” said Dr. Irhanida Abdul Kadir, who is a senior lecturer at School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, UOW-KDU Penang and also an advisor for this event.

Five participants joined the Hungry Ghost competition and had to challenge each other to eat 30 mantou buns within 20 minutes.

Adrian Lee, 20, wolfed down all his buns in time and bagged RM100 cash, a goodie bag, and hotel voucher.

“It wasn’t that difficult to finish all the mantou as I usually eat a lot,” said Adrian with a bright smile.

The Kids Zombie Run was a hot seller at the event. More than 50 kids took part. They had to complete missions such as solving mathematics questions and quizzes to get the sweet pumpkin basket. It was fun to see their curiosity and enjoyment because while the kids completed their missions, there were zombies and ghouls around them.

The event was a part of the coursework for Hospitality and Management students as a lesson in planning and executing the event. The practical method of learning is enriched further, now that UOW-KDU Penang is a part of the Australian university, University of Wollongong (UOW). UOW is a research-intensive public university and ranked in the top 250 universities in the world, with

an enviable record in teaching and research. UOW is frequently ranked in the Top 2% of universities worldwide, including QS World University Rankings.
