A Fine Effort By Aspiring Chefs

George Town, 16 July 2019 – IN a bid to impress 70 discerning dinner guests, over 15 UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College culinary arts students whipped up scrumptious dishes at their college in Anson Road.

Khaw Jia Yeen, 21, said she was excited to serve ‘real’ guests.

“This is a first for me and I think it is a good opportunity to learn about fine dining. This dinner requires a lot of effort as we need to be very delicate and detailed in presenting and garnishing the dishes,” Khaw said while preparing the dishes recently.

UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts senior lecturer Darren Tan, who was supervising the students, said they were selected from the year one and year two batches.

“We hope to provide these students with hands-experience in preparing for actual guests. This will help them gain a better footing in the culinary world and provide them with knowledge,” he added.

For dinner, the students served Watermelon Musk Cocktail, Sous Vide Organic Eggs with Salmon Gravlax and Banoffee Pie with Toffee Ganache to 70 Malaysian and Australian guests. The guests were relaxing at a pre-event dinner for a press conference on the acquisition of UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College by the University of Wollongong (UOW).
